The novel followsΒ Morgan Grant and her sixteen-year-old daughter, Clara, desire nothing more than to have distinct identities.

Morgan is resolute in her determination to prevent her daughter from replicating the same errors she madeβ€”becoming pregnant and marrying at a young ageβ€”which caused her to defer her own aspirations. Clara is adamant about avoiding a path similar to her mother's. She sees her mother as predictable and lacking any spontaneous traits.

Their opposing personalities and conflicting objectives create an increasingly challenging coexistence for Morgan and Clara. The sole person capable of restoring harmony to their household is Chrisβ€”Morgan’s husband, Clara’s father, and the family's cornerstone. However, this tranquility is shattered when Chris becomes involved in a tragic and questionable accident. The sorrowful and enduring repercussions will extend far beyond the lives of Morgan and Clara.

As they struggle to rebuild the fragments of their shattered world, Morgan discovers solace in an unexpected individual, while Clara turns to the one young man she has been prohibited from seeing. Each day brings new secrets, resentment, and misunderstandings that drive a wedge between mother and daughter. Their divide becomes so pronounced that reuniting might seem insurmountable.

The story also touches on themes of love, second chances, secrets, and the ways in which people cope with difficult situations. As the characters navigate their grief, they uncover hidden truths and confront the complexities of their relationships with each other and with the people around them.
